The long history of the Castello Poggiarello Estate has given it an impressive and imposing structure. Once a Medieval fortress for the military protection of the area.

It was then renovated and refurbished during the Renaissance to become the stately home for the powerful and wealthy Chigi-Saracini family.

The innovative use of large earthenware jars or amphoras, an Etruscan tradition long lost in time, completes the innovative approach that drives Luigi’s work.

About the Winery

Not far from Siena, to the south-west and at foot of the Montagnola hill. Today, Castello Poggiarello is an innovative winery. That Luigi Fineschi Pianigiani cultivates according to organic principles. With 7.5 hectares of vineyards containing a range of French grape varietals that flourish under the Tuscan sun. Surrounded by the thick woodlands that are merely interrupted with clearings and hamlets built through the ages. The area is blessed with mineral-rich calcareous limestone soils, especially iron.

 

Wine Making Philosophy

Instead of focusing on the local Sangiovese for the production of Chianti. The vineyard’s Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes give rise to a broad range of intensely aromatic wines. With an extraordinary richness and concentration, as well as minerality. These are aged in small, toasted barrels of oak which bestow a myriad of secondary and tertiary aromas to the wine.

Nereo IGT Toscana | Castello Poggiarello

A fresh, fruity and balanced wine produced with a combination of the Estate’s organic Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. A medium-bodied, smooth wine with a clean and dry finish that is particularly versatile, pairing well with a broad range of dishes.

Collerosso IGT Toscana | Castello Poggiarello

A smooth and well-rounded, full-bodied wine with subtle yet persistent aromas of ripe fruit and spices. A balanced wine with delicate tannins and a mineral, dry finish that gives it great drinkability. This wine can easily be enjoyed on its own, as well as accompanying tasty dishes including spicy food.

Montechiaro IGT Toscana | Castello Poggiarello

Produced with a selection of the Estate’s organic Cabernet Franc, only when the grapes have reached optimal ripeness and are perfect. A wine rich in intense colour and aromas, with a sophisticated bouquet of leather, tobacco, juniper and liquorice. An elegant wine with vivid, pleasant tannins that are well-integrated with its broad structure and notable acidity.

Montebruno IGT Toscana | Castello Poggiarello

Produced only in the best vintages from a selection of the Estate’s organic Cabernet Sauvignon, when the grapes reach optimal ripeness and are nothing short of perfect. This valuable wine has intense aromas of spices with a subtle smoky note, a rich and full mouth feel with a persistent presence on the palate and a very long finish. A sophisticated wine best enjoyed with careful savoring.

Sic Et Sempliciter IGT Toscana | Castello Poggiarello

Sic et Simpliciter is a Latin phrase used in Italian to say “simply so”, no complications that require explanation. A wine with fresh and fruity characteristics that are genuine and untainted by the tertiary flavors of oak aging. A blend of the Estate’s French grape varietals that macerate and age in terracotta amphoras, a natural material with a porosity that is similar to wood for the aging of the wine, but without enhancing the wine with other flavors. The prestigious bottles are hand-numbered and the closure with sealing wax is also realized and imprinted by hand.

Rosarco IGT Toscana | Castello Poggiarello

A fresh, fruity rosé wine made from the Estate’s organic Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. A dry wine with a notable freshness and smooth acidity that pairs well with dishes made with fresh produce or fish. A surprisingly long and dry finish renders the wine particularly inviting and drinkable.
